Averages - handicap events
we've got two tournaments coming up - on october 11th, and again the following saturday on the 18th. i didn't post a flyer for them because they're closed events.
one is a league particpant-only hi/lo tournament where tournament where the high shooter in the league is paired with the lowest, and then the second-highest with the second-lowest, etc.
the second is an invitational event that will be a singles competition.
the other events of the fall will be open to anyone. but in the interest of Fun and Fair Play, i put average caps on the teams.
here's the rub . . .
How Do You Verify Averages ??
when you're running a capped event. for me, it's pretty simple. i have averages on everyone that ever shot in any of our leagues, and that dates back at least a decade. plus, we get averages submitted from the summertime league that runs at a nearby fire company.
i also have averages from states and nationals, and i generally take the one that i know best represents the shooter's skills. so, if the guy goes and shoots a 41 average over 13 games at states, but holds a 34.8 on league night because he's on a crappy team and has no shot at the title, i'm not taking him on board in a tournament as a 34.
he may not actually be a 41 average to be honest. but, he's not a 34.
i'm a hardass about this because i'd rather field the complaints ahead of time, and fall back on the line that, "hey, you're a better shooter than you're giving yourself credit for, and I know that" - while they're putting together teams - than to have a mountain of grumbling to contend with on Gameday.
but that only works when i know everyone involved. this fall, i'm hoping that that won't be the case.
so, i thought i'd put up a post and see how anyone else who runs these things deals with the task of getting a group of teams together for a day of shooting that offers some fair competition for all.
